Day 9 – Busan

Gamcheon Culture Village was our stop for the day. The village started off during the Korean War. Refugees fled to the mountains and made it their home. Only in 2009 students, and artists and current residents made it colourful and a part of the Village Art Project.

The place is absolutely unique, and attracts lots of people daily. The climb to the village is steep and long, so I recommend going by bus, if you’re going to visit in the summer. The heat and the strain of climbing will kill you.

We walked around checking every little corner and turn and enjoying the view of Busan from the top of the mountains, and stopped for something to eat and drink. We had a really nice marshmallow ice cream too! But the place was quickly becoming packed with tourists so we decided to start our descent.

We then walked around the Nampodong area, and got lost in the streets, checking the street markets and the fish market – which was definitely more our vibe.

In the fish market, Jalgachi, we tried to buy fresh fish that then restaurants in the market can cook for you – but the place was completely packed. The market is amazing. Fresh,y caught fish and sea food everywhere and most everyone likes to engage with you, no doubt to try and sell their products. It’s definitely a sight to see and I found it more interesting than the village, I dare say.

We ended up having an awesome time eating Hotteok instead. This pizza/pancake like thing was so incredibly delicious that we just didn’t want to leave. It’s a fluffy and light dough filled with cheese and veggies and shrimp and it’s just to die for. The place was quaint and cozy and we just felt really comfortable there. So even though we kind of missed the whole fish experience, this was still a really nice way to say goodbye to Busan.
